I checked most of Lake Barkley/main lake from Hwy 68 to Linton yesterday via
kayak. Noted a small colony of nesting bcn herons and gb herons just south of
Hwy 68 on the midlake Devil's Elbow Island. Osprey nests included five nests
on the Lake Barkley 68 bridge, two on top on the east side and three under the
bridge on bracing. Four o. nests were on root wads or downed tree tops - two of
these active with one having two almost grown young. These low o. nests are
approximatley 4 ft. above summer pool - thankfully we have not had significant
high water this season which sometimes covers and washes away low o. nests.
Other osprey nests observed were on navigation light platforms and two free
standing o. platforms. One large navigation light and its osprey nesting
platform that typically produced osprey young were missing most likely taken
out by a barge.

A day earlier Honker Lake was also surveyed by kayak for nesting ospreys. Two
nests on powerline poles near Honkel Lake present in past years were missing.
O. nests on powerline poles are subject to being blown away during high winds.

Many pairs of ospreys were observed caring for young that will be fledging
soon.
