I was driving slowly along the Trace watching a flock
of 220 White Pelicans in Vs headed south at an
altitude of probably 6-7000 feet. They began to
thermal soar and I spotted a smaller bird with a
somewhat similar wing pattern soaring with them. I
got out of the car and with binocs refound the smaller
bird which was a Snow Goose! The goose was actually
turning in lazy circles with the pelicans, not
flapping a wing (must have been a great thermal). I
am sometimes amazed at the behavior which some birds
adopt when associating with "birds of a different
feather". This bird will probably experience the most
efficient migration of any Snow Goose when it comes to
conserving energy. I snapped a few photos and will
publish a couple on the KOS webpage later.

Joanie and I were still hosting a few hummers through
the 5th. On that date, I saw the underside of the
tail of an adult male which was feeding on the far
side of the feeder, the tail being deeply forked and
dark. It has been some time since we've seen an adult
male. It was chased off by a juvenile female
Ruby-throated and not seen again. I sure wish I had
gotten a decent look at that bird. We haven't seen
any hummers since, and the average last date for us is
around October 13.
