[birdky] LAUREL LAKE

Drove down to Laurel Lake for a 3 hour trail run with my dog. It was a bad
week for owls and raptors in
Madison County as I saw 4 large hawks or owls dead along I-75 between Berea
and Renfro Valley. At
highway speeds it looked like two large owls and two large hawks along the
southbound side of the highway.

Lots of Woodpeckers on the trail at Laurel Lake. I saw several pileated,
hairy, downy, flickers, red bellied, red headed, and yellow bellied
sapsuckers. Lots of good habitat for them as most of the pines died off a
few years ago. Also saw lots of eastern bluebirds, juncos, chickadees,
titmouse, white-breasted nuthatch, carolina wren, winter wren, goldfinch,
junco, towhee, yellow-rumped warbler, and hermit thrush. I often see
eagles along the lake but did not see any today.
