This is the Kentucky Bird Line, sponsored by the Kentucky Ornithological
Society.  This update is current as of  December 20, 2004 at 11:00 AM
EDT.  The highlights of this update are:

 

Christmas bird counts got underway this week. Highlights from the Land
Between the Lakes CBC were 43 COMMON LOON, 1 immature PACIFIC LOON (in
Demumbers Bay), 139 HORNED GREBE, 480 WHITE PELICAN, 119 GREAT BLUE
HERONS, 263 COMMON GOLDENEYE, 8 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 27 BALD EAGLE, I
immature GOLDEN EAGLE, 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, 7 FORSTER'S TERN, a
BROWN THRASHER, and 5 FOX SPARROW. There was also a LAUGHING GULL
counted during count week.

 

The Nolan Lake CBC had a light phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK,  lots of BLACK
VULTURE, RUSTY BLACK BIRDS, and 8 WILSON'S SNIPE. SNIPE were also
mentioned from the Henderson sloughs; as were 10 TUNDRA SWAN seen in the
Sauerheber unit. 

 

There has been several postings on SANDHILL CRANES, the latest coming on
the 16th with a single bird in Logan County, and several hundred in a
fly over in Owen County.

 

Other postings of interest were 40 plus CHIPPING SPARROWS in Jefferson
County, 15-20 CEDAR WAXWINGS in Calloway County, FOX SPAROWS in
Owensboro, and 2 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS in Ravens Run (Fayette County)
