This update is current as of August 23, 2004 at 5:00 PM EDT. The highlights of this update are: Highlights this week are mostly shorebirds. The eastern most report was from Minor Clark Fish Hatchery. 15 BLACK TERN, as well as LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SPOTTED, WESTERN, LEAST, and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, and SEMIPALMATED PLOVER were reported in a bird club trip. The GREAT EGRETS that visit there in the fall were also seen. Fishing Creek mudflats also had 6 BLACK TERN, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, WESTERN, LEAST, PECTORAL, SPOTTED, and 1 STILT SANDPIPER. The Sinclair unit of Peabody WMA turn up a LEAST BITTERN, 4 WILLET, 10 CASPIAN TERN, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, and Sandpipers of the following: SOLITARY, SEMIPALMATED, LEAST, WEST, and both YELLOWLEGS. 5 SEDGE WREN were also noted. Jonathon Creek held 5 CASPIAN, and 18 FORSTER'S TERN. Some of the FORSTER'S Were still in breeding plumage. Smithland dam on the Ohio turned up 1 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER on the 19th. As well as CASPIAN, and BLACK TERN. Mitchell Lake in Ballard County also proved to be a place to see BLACK TERN. Along with most of the other sandpipers mentioned, 1 BAIRD'S, and 8 STILT SANDPIPER, plus 1 WILSON'S PHALAROPE, and 1 BALCK-BELLIED PLOVER were also observed. West Vaco WMA in Carlisle County had the only RUDDY TURNSTONE mentioned. It was on the Mississippi River. Other signs of migration were noted In Tom Sawyer State Park where COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were observed in large numbers. Also mixed flocks of resident and migrant birds including NORTHERN PARULA, CHESTNUT-SIDED, YELLOW-THROATED, and BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS were seen. Thanks for calling the Kentucky Bird Line.
