The Kentucky Ornithological Society Spring meeting we held this weekend at
the Convention Center Inn, near Central City, in Muhlenberg County.
Attendance was quite good and included numerous first time attendees and
guests from as far as Idaho and England. An enjoyable time was had by all
those present.
A focus of the weekend was birding in the Peabody Wildlife Management Area.
Saturday morning field trips covered areas of the WMA Sinclair Unit in
Muhlenberg County and the WMA Homestead Unit in Ohio County. A Saturday
afternoon field trip returned to the Sinclair Unit. The Sunday morning
field trip also returned to the Sinclair Unit of the WMA while some members
journeyed to the Sloughs WMA, Henderson County, to search for the recently
sighted Glossy Ibis individuals.
Over 130 species were observed by members in attendance with some highlights
including Great Egret, the Great Blue Heron rookery in the Sinclair Unit,
several individual Bell's Vireos, Henslow's Sparrows, and Grasshopper
Sparrows, as well as numerous Blue Grosbeaks and Orchard Orioles. Multiple
Bald Eagles, several other raptor species, several shorebird species, and
numerous species of swallows, warblers and sparrows were also observed.
On Friday evening, the Kentucky Bird Records Committee provided an
informative program on appropriate procedures for the reporting of rare,
truly unusual, and out of season observations while Win Ahrens presented a
summary and slides of his recent birding trip to Antarctica. Dr. Ahrens'
slides also included shots of birds in Chile and Argentina.
Saturday evening, Dr. Jim Giacomo of the University of Tennessee presented
research on grassland species of the "Big Barrens Area of southern Kentucky
and northern Tennessee. The Barrens Area includes portions of Christian,
Todd, Logan, and Simpson Counties in Kentucky and portions of Montgomery,
Stuart, and Robertson counties in Tennessee. Nests of grassland species of
birds were available for inspection. The program was a "perfect fit" with
the birding opportunities afforded by the Peabody WMA. The program by was
very informative regarding grassland bird species and their population
requirements. Numerous questions at the conclusion of the presentation
provided by members indicated a strong interest in the subject and the
presentation.
A silent auction of member donated items was also held on Saturday. Over
$240 was raised by the auction for the Society. The Society thanks members
Hap Chambers and Dona Coates for organizing the Silent Auction. The Society
also thanks the Kentucky Bird Records Committee, Win Ahrens, & Dr. Giacomo
for program presentations, Brainard Palmer-Ball, David Roemer, and Larry
Peaveler for field trip leadership, and all persons in attendance for their
support.
This fall the Society will meet at KenLake State Resort Park, in Marshall
County on Kentucky Lake, the last weekend in September. Rooms are presently
being held through 28 August. Attendees are urged to make reservations soon
as possible.
