I attended a watershed summit meeting last Tuesday here in Lexington, and I
learned there that one of my most beloved spots in Lexington, Meadowbrook Park,
could be in jeopardy to development. This park is 27 acres of great green
habitat right here in our city, and if you have been with birdky long, you know
I've posted several sightings from this park. There is everything from Eastern
Screech Owl and a long time resident Great Horned Owl, to thrushes and Brown
Thrashers, and a welcome center for warblers, to an occasional Great Blue
Heron, and I have a long list of birds who have called Meadowbrook Park home at
one time or another. I have even observed bats here at dusk one evening, I'm
not often out there to dusk, but I was once and saw them circling in an open
space gobbling up insects near standing dead trees. There are also water rats
and groundhogs, and wildflowers! It is also of great importance to the Hickman
Creek watershed.
The land is now owned by the school board who wishes to sell the land for
some revenue. The first plan, as I understand it, was to sell it to the city.
However, the school board had it appraised and has a price on it the city is
now being very reluctant about, and it may go into the hands of a developer
who'll bulldoze and concrete. I am not sure what is in the power of private
citizens, but I am hoping that there is something we can do, and that some
people here may know what that something is!
Best birding wishes,
Ben Albritton
Lexington
