Eddie Huber and I visited Morgan Pond in southern Christian County yesterday. Most of the transient lakes and pools in the vicinity remain high and very few migratory shorebirds were seen there. However, as the lakes drop out (assuming the rains subside!), there will be some habitat during the next few weeks. Anyone visiting this site should recall that notifying the US Army of your presence will diminish the chances of having your birding interrupted in some manner varying from a minor inconvenience to a major headache by the Fort Campbell Military Police! To that end, I repeat below a portion of a post to BIRDKY from mid-April 2008 outlining protocol for visiting the area: Anyone visiting Morgan's Pond in southern Christian County should be sure to call Ft. Campbell upon your arrival in the area, which is just outside the perimeter of the Military Reservation. Notifiying them of your presence will reduce the chance of being "checked out" by the Ft. Campbell Security Staff if someone calls in "suspicious looking activity" (i.e. birders with scope and/or camera appearing to be someone up to no good). This protocol has worked out in past years and we are continuing it this year. The security guard post phone number (manned 24/7) is (270) 956-2741. Yesterday the staff person who answered the phone was very nice and the conversation was straightforward. Keep in mind, however, that not everyone on staff might not be as familiar with the situation. You might have to provide them with your name, vehicle type, etc. and explain that you are just watching birds on the lakes north of the airfield. Be sure to mention that you are *not* on the Ft. Campbell base, but simply on private land near the airfield and that this protocol was set up a couple of years ago just to notify them of your presence to avoid any problems. bpb, Louisville
