[birdky] Horned Larks

I had an opportunity to go out on this sharp, cold day here in Mason County to
cruise the farm fields for Larks and Longspurs (and possibly Buntings).
Several of you have given me excellent tips on where to look and what to look
for. It didn't take long before I saw a good sized flock of Horned Larks in
the snow-covered stubble of a corn field. What a rush it is to see a new bird
and become a little acquainted with its behavior and voice and mannerisms.
Occasionally a handful would fly into the road and peck at gravel (?) and then
return to the field. I watched them for about a half hour, but could not see
any Longspurs. What ended the session was the sudden whoosh of a hawk -
probably a Cooper's - out of a distant broad stand of trees. I was surprised
at the number of larks that flew up and sped off, four times the number I had
thought were there - at least a hundred.
Returning home, I also stopped to watch a couple of forlorn looking American
Pipits. Juncos seemed to be everywhere enjoying the day.
I'm looking forward to seeing the elusive Longspur and the baffling Bunting
this weekend. It should remain cold and wintery, apparently just the kind of
resort weather they like.
