[birdky] Highlights from GBBC

For the first time I participated in the four day GBBC this past 4 day
weekend.I counted Fri, Sun, Mon. I had a total count of 39.All except
one I saw on Mon. This day I took a couple of walks in neighboring fields.

1 Eastern Screech Owl
11 Sandhill Cranes
25 Horned Larks
2 Fox Sparrows
28 Rusty Blackbirds
50 Brown-headed Cowbirds

It's not that I consider Rusty's and Cowbirds Highlights but such
numbers are unusual.

Will someone out there tell me how to put together an emergency
treatment kit for freezing or injured birds? I couldn't even find
an eye dropper to get a little moisture down the throat of a half
frozen, starving Bluebird. I had driven down the driveway to a second set of
yard feeders and saw on the ground a small furry creature.
As I got out of the truck and walked toward it, the bird managed
a weak shuffle an inch or two toward me.As it warmed inside my truck
it wrapped its toes around my finger and opened its eyes.
But it died before I could get any sustenance down it.
What is the life span of a Bluebird? Now I'm wondering if that bird
recognized me.
A few years ago there was one bluebird left in the nestbox that could
not fly. I found a Cow-snake in the box and the one remaining bird
had been sort of squushed from the weight of the snake. It took me
several tries of tossing the bird up in the air ,allowing it to
spread its wings as it floated, half flapping to the ground .Finally
it made its way to a tree branch to join the rest of the family.Jlp
