I saw a hermit thrush and 2 wood ducks on a walk to the creek this afternoon.
Also found a patch of Dutchman's breeches. Years ago I found a patch of
Dutchman's breeches along the same stretch of creek but thought it was
destroyed when the landowner bulldozed a tapered approach to the creek for the
purpose of setting up an irrigation rig. He's dead and gone now and I know for
certain he never used that tapered approach but one time to set up an
irrigation rig. I'm glad I was mistaken about him destroying the Dutchman's
breeches patch.
This morning I watched a coyote for maybe ten minutes from a range of less
than a tenth of a mile. It snuffled all around where I had been feeding hay
rolls, probably looking for baby calf crap. Then it crossed under an electric
fence into the clover, where it walked along very slowly, stopping and
listening every few steps. Mouse hunting there, I guess. It never saw me, but
when it worked its way down to where the breeze was blowing my scent its way,
it suddenly took off in a lope and disappeared.
