[birdky] Henderson Co. Lark Sparrows, et. al.

7/21/09

McDonald Landing Road

I thought I would followup on a visit by Brainard to McDonald Landing Road and check on the Lark Sparrows.

The most Lark Sparrows I have seen there.
Probably 10 total including both adults and JUVIES.
So apparently successful nesting in the area.

Other birds seen:

Red-tailed Hawk
Am. Kestrel
Green Heron
Bobwhite
Yellow-billed Cuckoo
Belted Kingfisher
N. Flicker
E. Kingbird
Great-crested Flycatcher
E. Bluebirds
Prothonotary Warbler
Orchard Oriole
Field Sparrow
Song Sparrow

next visit was to 268 slough

The Great Egrets and Little Blue Herons were gone.
Killdeer
Least Sandpipers
Solitary Sandpiper

Shorebird Unit of the Sloughs

Great Blue Heron
Killdeer
Solitary Sandpiper

Hardy Slough

Green Herons 3
Belted Kingfisher 3
Orchard Oriole 4

Notes: The dikes at Hardy Slough have finally been mowed. And, some of the impoundments were being mowed today. Shorebird Unit has not been mowed and it is the least conducive to shorebirds that I have ever seen it. I did not visit Pond Creek Marsh. When I was last there it was set up to net Wood Ducks.
