In the 1951 edition of Pettingill's Guide to Bird Finding: East, under the Mammoth Cave entry, I read, "During the late afternoons of summer the tinkling, incomparable song of the (Bachman's) Pine-woods Sparrow comes from the old fields of briars and broom sedge."
