[birdky] Harrison County & Lexington

Harrison County:
My sister has a considerable feeder display at the moment. On Saturday I
set for about 45 minutes and counted approximately 150 goldfinch, 60
juncos, 30 cardinals, 15 TREE SPARROWS, and 4 fox sparrows. Remarkably,
I saw only 1 each of titmouse, w-b nuthatch, and chickadee. And there
were no house finch. Other birds included common grackle, and
brown-headed blackbird; the lone red-winged that has been there was not
seen. The party was broken up by an adult male Cooper's. The only bird
left was a downy woodpecker froze in position; when the cooper's flew
the downy shifted for cover and peered around the corner to watch him
leave.
Other birds on the farm included a small covey of bobwhite, 2 red-headed
woodpeckers, and 2 purple finch.

Lexington/Fayette County:
I counted 780 Canada Geese and 2 Snow Geese while shoveling my drive
way. Later we visited the area in which they were rising from. There had
to be a thousand on the ground there, but I have no idea how many had
returned. I did see several hundred returning later that evening. They
are on both sides of Old Richmond Road about a mile out from the
Athens-Boonesboro Rd split.

I also had a Brown Thrasher in my yard and one at Ravens Run, which was
beautiful under the fresh snow fall Sunday. The running streams had
frozen falls, and snow capped exposed rocks. And the wind dropped snow
from the trees sometimes in clumps, sometimes in a mist. Oh yeah, and I
saw 12-15 Horned Lark fly over our moving car.

On a personal note, I am wearing glasses now; it is nice to be able to
id again but it sure hampers binocular use.
