21 January 2007,
David Roemer and I cruised around south Logan and Todd Counties today
checking out local ponds & transient water spots. Not a lot was observed,
but the highlight was clearly a single Greater Yellowlegs on the SW side of
Guthrie Swamp, just east of the fair city itself. This bird was observed
visually and also issued the 3 noted call more than once. It flew before we
left and did not land. While it is possible that the bird remained in the
area, this could not be confirmed. Other birds observed at the Swamp
included ~5 Green-winged teal, ~ 10 Mallards, an uncounted few Canada Geese,
an uncounted few Great Blue Herons, and at least 1 Belted Kingfisher. David
saw, but I missed, a single Double Crested Cormorant in the air.
We also trekked to Murphy's Pond, in southern Christian County, but found
that it had not formed and was completely dry. While there, we did observe,
but did not count, ~ 100 American Pipits.
That concludes this report.
