I had a pleasant paddle on the backwaters of Fishing Creek this morning. It was foggy, calm and a
mist of rain at times. The water was so flat it looked like you could walk on it. The lake level is
around 713', so I'll have to abandon my favorite put in places on the Lake Cumberland WMA soon and
use the Fishing Creek Rec. Area ramp, which is busy with boat traffic. Today I had to wade mud to
the top of my shoes to put in and take out. The most pleasant part of the paddle is up the creek
from the Cumberland Parkway bridge, but the most productive place for shorebirds is below the bridge
at Horseshoe Bend. I silently cursed the traffic noise going over the bridge that interrupts the
sound of water from my paddles and birds singing or calling from the banks.
The birds:
Great Egret 1
Sanderling 1
Long-billed Dowitcher 1 (call)
Spotted Sandpiper 12
Solitary Sandpiper 4
Pectoral Sandpiper 42
Least Sandpiper 20
Semipalmated Sandpiper 1
Greater Yellowlegs 1
Birding smiles. . . . .
