Swamp Sparrows seemed to be the bird of the day Saturday morning. First in the
fence row behind the barn, then in the fence row above the pond. As I watched
the second group of Swamp Sparrows, a coyote caught my eye entering the meadow
from further up the fence row. It disappeared into an ironweed patch below the
pond dike before I could capture it. I walked on down to the pond dike and
scanned the ironweeds, hoping it would emerge from cover. It didn't, but as I
scanned, a Cooper's Hawk briefly landed in a tree just beyond the ironweeds.
After checking the cows, I returned to the house by way of my weedy hay field
margin. It was filled with peekaboo Swamp Sparrows unwilling to pose for me
plus more and more Monarch Butterflies the further I walked. As I neared the
barn lot, I saw where the butterflies were coming from. They had been roosting
overnight in an oak tree in the barn lot and were now drifting away one by one.
There were still 50 or more scattered on the Eastern side of the tree by the
time I stood under it at about 8:00 A.M. I've seen Monarchs concentrated in an
overnight roost only one other time, 40 some years ago in a Honey Locust. I had
a film camera at the time and it had slide film in it. As I remember, that
roost had hundreds of butterflies.
When I got back to the house, a Swamp Sparrow finally posed for me in a
pear tree in the back yard and I saw my FOS Junco.
