[birdky] FW: Your Help Needed with PIF Citizen Science Projects

 FYI:
Sorry for the late notice on this, but I'm just now back from maternity
leave and going through e-mails. For anyone interested in
participating...These can be conducted on existing BBS routes or on a
new route. If on an existing BBS route, they should not be conducted on
the same day.

Estimating Numbers of North American Birds

Estimating population sizes for North American bird species has become a
high priority for Partners in Flight and other bird conservation
initiatives and organizations.
Knowledge of population size helps us set numerical conservation targets
at local, regional, and continental levels. These targets, in turn,
help us set specific habitat objectives. Population sizes - both
current and target numbers - also resonate well with Congress and other
political groups as they decide what resources to allocate for research,
conservation, and management programs.

Partners in Flight is undertaking two citizen-science projects to
improve our estimates of species' population sizes in North America.

1) The first project involves surveys modeled on the Breeding Bird
Survey but on which detection cues (songs, visual cues, notes) are
recorded.

2) The second project involves intensive surveys of a few birds in
restricted patches of habitat where observers record details of vocal
activity during short time intervals.

Details for both projects are available at
http://greatbasin.nbii.gov/cbm/ (click on "Population Size Estimates").

Please consider participating in one or both surveys, and please
circulate this notice to all who might be interested.
