[birdky] Early Warblers at Red River Gorge

Highlights of a two day (22 & 23 March) trip to the Red River Gorge include
the following highlights:
One BLACK AND WHITE WARBLER near Rock Bridge on the 22nd - possibly an early
spring date for the State of Kentucky (earliest date in new annotated
checklist - 23 March).
Also very early as well as multiple numbers of BLUE-HEADED VIREOS and
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS.
Early courtship activities of the isolated population of RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCHES at Rock Bridge - a total of 3 pairs noted.
Pine Warblers on territory in good numbers with nesting activity noted.
Eastern Phoebes also on territory in excellent numbers.
Details for 22 March:
Rock Bridge / Swift Camp Creek trail, Wolfe Co.;
First noted singing Blue-headed Vireo near old log dam, then a singing Black
and White Warbler came into view along with 2 Golden-crowned Kinglets, and 3
Carolina Chickadees. Near Creation Falls a pair of Red-breasted Nuthatches
was observed with the male feeding the female and both inspecting likely
snags and cavities. A Black-throated Green Warbler was sighted as well as
another Blue-headed Vireo heard nearby. Another Black-throated Green Warbler
present at picnic area. A total of 7 Pine Warblers and 5 Eastern Phoebes also
noted.
Whittleton Arch Trail, Powell Co. - 2 Black Vultures, 30 Turkey Vultures, 2
Red-shouldered Hawks, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 2 Eastern Pheobes, 2 Dark-eyed
Juncos.
Details for 23 March:
Lower Trail near Natural Bridge SP Nature Center, Powell Co.;
2 Eastern Phoebes, 1 Blue-headed Vireo, 2 Dark-eyed Juncos.
Rock Bridge Trail, Wolfe Co.;
2 pairs Red-breasted Nuthatches in territorial dispute near cliff overlook -
lots of chasing and agitated trill song vocalizations by both males - 1 male
White-breasted Nuthatch also singing nearby. One male RBNU went to same snag
as last year's nesting - a freshly enlarged hole noted. Also 1 Brown Creeper,
4 Black-throated Green Warblers, 1 Blue-headed Vireo, 8 Pine Warblers (1
carrying nesting material).
Sky Bridge, Wolfe Co.;
1 Blue-headed Vireo, 3 Pine Warblers.
