Another great May meeting at the Breaks Interstate Park and the surrounding
areas in KY and VA (Delorme p. 73, C-10)! The EKBC was joined on the 18th
and 19th by several members of the Buchanan Co. (VA) Bird Club, to bring the
total number of attendees up to nine.
The weather was not very cooperative on Saturday; the rain and fog prevented
any real birding until about 2 PM. We had a great day after that. The
biggest surprise on Saturday was the discovery of a mixed flock of Dunlin,
Semipalmated and Least Sandpipers at the strip mine on top of Beaver Knob.
We also tried in vain to get a look at the "Lawrence's" (Blue-winged x
Golden-winged hybrid) Warbler that has been seen on nesting territory at a
nearby location in VA. We tried again Sunday, and we believe that we heard
the bird singing; unfortunately, it was singing from cover and we couldn't
spot it.
No Swainson's Warbler sighted this year, but we did hear one singing from
the Cold Spring Trail, where we have found the birds during our last 2
Breaks excursions.
Due to conflicts with Father's Day and several other events that members are
involved with, our June meeting will be held 2 weeks later than usual, on
the 30th. We will be meeting at Yatesville Lake, details will be posted
closer to the time of the meeting.
Because we broke up into separate groups at times, I'm not sure that my
