Greetings
We have quite a few tent caterpillar webs on trees near our gravel drive and
along trails in the woods. Many are only 6 to 8 feet from the ground.
Since retiring here in early April, I've seen numerous arrivals:
Whip poor will
B+W warb
Bl-Gray Gnatcatcher
Red eyed
White eyed
Scarlet tan
Chat
Brown Thrashers
Bluebirds
Phoebe
Carolina Wren
Towhee
YB Cuckoo
Catbird
Balt Oriole
Wood thrush
Hooded
Blackpoll (not sure)
Blackburnian (not sure)
RBGs
Indigos
Redstarts
Has anyone ever seen birds actually harvesting the tent caterpillars at the
web? At what point do the caterpillars become food for birds? If these
caterpillars are not a popular part of bird diets, should I consider removing
the tents?
