[birdky] Dams and Warren

29 January 2009

KENTUCKY DAM (Little discharge and far fewer gulls than recently)
Great Black-backed Gull (first-cycle above dam)
Glaucous Gull (first-cycle above dam)

BARKLEY DAM (Better discharge and more gulls)
Lesser Black-backed Gull (adult and first and second-cycle below dam)
Snow Bunting (30-40 below dam)

The Great Black-backed Gull was first observed picking at a floating dead fish
to the east of the eastern-most pulloff. It then flew south up the lake for
probably half a mile when it spotted the Glaucous gull riding in the lee of the
western-most buoy above the dam. At seeing that bird it altered its course and
flew across the lake just to harass the Glaucous Gull. It then settled on the
water for a nice look and a few distant photos of both together.

During the 4-5 hours I spent at the dams, I had 12-15 mixed flocks of Horned
Larks, Lapland Longspurs, and Snow Buntings moving westward overhead. The
flocks varied in number of individuals from 15-20 to 40-50 birds.

GRIFFIN
Snow and Ross's Geese
It's amazing how quickly wild birds adopt the tame habits of domestics when at
the park. Both of these birds will practically eat out of one's hand with the
local geese and ducks which are fed daily by visitors to the park. They
immediately lose the tameness when leaving the park to feed in the area fields.

There is water in the transient lakes now but very few waterfowl yet with
Mallards, Blacks, Gadwall, and Pintails present in small numbers.

I spent the afternoon photographing the trees in northern Warren and southern
Butler counties and encountered a small flock of Purple Finches in Warren and a
Loggerhead Shrike in Butler.
