[birdky] Dams 20 Feb 2003

Dick Lord and I spent part of the day birding the
Barkley and Kentucky dams area today, and despite the
all-day fog, mist, and heat distortion, we were able
to scrape out a few nice birds.  

Highlights included adult and 1st yr. Thayer's Gulls
as well as a 2nd yr. Lesser Black-backed Gull below
Barkley Dam, and an adult LBB Gull near the Tennessee
River at Calvert City.  A female Black Scoter was
present with the flock of mixed divers that stretches
for miles above Barkley dam.  All expected diver
species were present including good numbers of Greater
Scaup, Canvasback, Common Goldeneye, and Red-breasted
Mergansers.  

Approximately 350 White Pelicans were resting on
gravel bars between Barkley dam and Boyd's Landing.

The transient lakes at Woodburn have formed during the
past few days, but numbers of birds have yet to build.
 Approximately 165 Sandhill Cranes were present
yesterday at McElroy, as were good numbers of larks,
pipits, and Lapland Longspurs.  A pair of Greater
White-fronted Geese was in the company of Canadas at
Walton's Pond on the 17th.
