[birdky] Cave Run Lake Report Eagles and Osprey

I've been doing some bird surveys around Cave Run and I thought everyone would
be interested in knowing the Osprey nest is active.  Both Steve Bonney and I
observed it from the parking lot at the end of Leatherwood Road yesterday, May
21..   If you go to see it, take a scope.   Look for the orange bouy then look
to the left.   There is a small opening in the leaves that you can see the
best.  Steve watched the adults switch out...I saw one sitting on the nest and
the second one flew to the nest with a stick and was busy fixing things.   A
boat came by and the one fixing the nest flew away but the other just sat
still...did not even really hunk down.  I was very worried the high water would
cover the nest, but luckily it has not.  Its is only approximately 4 feet above
the water, since this lake is at flood level.

The Eagle nest at Renyold's Hollow is nearing the young leaving the nest.   The
other nest, Fred Busroe and I sat for over an hour trying to see the
location. We can't locate it with the leaves on.  We hoped to catch the parents
feeding, but with no luck.  We did see a mature one fly out of the area, but
did not see exactly where it came from.  We are hopeful with seeing the mature
one that the nest was successful.

Other highlights while watching for the eagle, a prothonotarywarbler was
flitting around in the trees at the beach.  The best was a small group of
shorebirds landed not more that 5 feet were Fred and I were sitting.  There was
one semi-palm plover, 5 semi-palm sandpipers, and 2 western sandpipers.  Also
had one spotted sandpiper.  All in all, a great day to be sitting on log,
watching...and if you want more info on the osprey's location...zap me note.

happy birding and enjoy the holiday weekend...Evelyn Morgan
