I walked around my yard and down the street a ways along the edge of a small
wooded area, and got to see a few firsts for the year (I haven't been out
birding much).
Firsts today:
Cape May Warbler
Scarlet Tanager (female)
Eastern Phoebe
Others today:
American Goldfinch (I swear there are millions of them!)
White-breasted Nuthatches (we have 2 with a nest full of babies inside a
natural hole high up in one of our trees... been watching them go in with
food and out with fecal sacs. These guys are fearless)
White-throated Sparrow
House Wren
Carolina Wren
Eastern Bluebird
Carolina Chickadee
Titmouse
Red-bellied Woodpecker (the male and female are always out and about here)
Mourning Dove
and... Brown-headed Cowbirds... EVERYWHERE! I've found some broken eggs
underneath a pine tree... I haven't spotted a nest nearby, but they are very
dense trees. I suspect cowbirds or blue jays. The cowbirds are really
everywhere... all over the yard, calling all the time! I'm feeling terrible
for the other birds!
A red-tailed hawk has been soaring over seemingly every day. I've spotted
him every time I've been out watching the yard birds. He's high enough that
he only appears as a tiny silhouette in the sky, but he comes in clear with
my bins. He flew just over the tops of the house and the neighbor's house a
few days ago... none of the yard birds noticed him!
Two nights ago I heard at least two Great-Horned Owls. One was across the
street, and one (or more) was down the street a ways. There was one in the
yard several nights ago.
That's it for now!
