[birdky] Black capped vs Carolina chickadees

I am not an expert, and I find this distinction between Chickadees
interesting and would appreciate others input on the subject. I never
thought about it before. I grew up in Western Michigan, and return to
visit my parents often, where there are nothing but Black-capped
Chickadees. I now live in Southern Indiana with nothing but Carolina
Chickadees. Based upon my observations I would agree with the general
tendencies of this statement that Blackcaps do tend to prefer lower cover
than Carolinas. However, I would also caution that both will freely use
all levels of the tree especially if Evergreens or foraging opportunities
are present.

Steve Sweeny once mentioned a difference he observed in behavior between
the
two Chickadee species when they visited his feeders in Boyd County. The
Black-caps tended to stay lower in the trees, while the Carolinas would go
to the higher branches.
