[birdky] Birding in the Andes

JoAnn and I just returned from Las Gralarias Reserva guest house near
Nanegalito, Ecuador, not far from Mindo. Jane Lyons, the owner, has protected
1,000 plus acres of mostly sub-tropical primary forest at about 6,000 feet on
the equator. Las Gralarias means The Antpittas, and antpittas there are. (And
down the road a local rancher manages to call in a couple of Giant,
yellow-breasted, and ochre-breasted antpittas, using worms as a lure.) No mean
feat, as these are very reclusive birds that are seldom seen.

Golden-headed quetzals; Plate-billed mountain toucans; masked trogons; booted
racquetails; narino tapaculos; lots of hummers and tanagers at the feeders.
Cool days and excellent food. About a two-hour drive from Quito (Lodge will
pick you up). Check out Las Gralarias website if interested.
