Golden eagles. Three at 2:00 this afternoon, soaring and chasing each other, passing over the road a few times. At least one of them had white wing patches and a distinct white band on its tail. Eagles were between the third and fourth creek crossings along Harrison Fork Road, which can be reached by staying on 245 instead of entering the main Bernheim entrance; go a few miles and turn right just past a pizza place. A few miles later, and you reach the first creek crossing. (You're on your own to decide if you can safely drive through the crossings. It's not always possible, even with a high-clearance 4-WD vehicle. In particular, icing or recent rain can mean you turn around and spend your time some other way.) Red-breasted nuthatch. One in pines across the road from the visitors center. N. harrier. Female, seemed to be headed for meadow in center of main loop. Ben and Mary Yandell Louisville
