A single Bachman's Sparrow was observed in
southeastern Calloway County today. It afforded me an
excellent view from a distance of 35-40 feet.
Directions to the spot where the bird was seen are as
follows:
From HWY 444 near Hamlin and Blood River Baptist
Church, take Beat Farmer Road approximately 1/2 mile
to Flora Drive. Turn left on Flora Dr. and proceed
approximately .4 mile. There is a hill on the right
side of the road that is in early successional growth.
The bird was flushed from an area of grass and bare
ground adjacent to a line of brush and small trees
that run down the center of the field. After a pause
on an open branch, it disappeared into the brush and
wasn't seen again. I returned to the area three hours
later, and waited quietly hoping to see the bird and
obtain some photographs, but with no luck.
I didn't hear any Bachman's Sparrows singing, but it
may well be on territory. It is also possible that it
represents a non or post-breeding individual.
Other birds present that are typically found in that
type of habitat were chats, White-eyed Vireos, Prairie
Warblers, towhees, and lots of Field Sparrows. Several
of the Field Sparrows were wearing their streaked
juvenal plumage.
Henslow's Sparrows were heard in two hay fields in the
area also.
Again I would like to extend my appreciation to Joe
Tom Erwin for sharing his knowledge of the area. He
had shown me some spots were Bachman's Sparrows had
been located in previous years.
Joe Tom and I later checked the cormorant rookery, and
there were approximately 100 present in the area. Also
observed were two Forster's Terns and five Caspian
Terns as well as a dozen Ring-billed Gulls.
A few ducks of interest were present at Morgan's Pond
in Christian County. They included Ruddies (4),
Canvasback, Ring-necked, Blue-winged Teal (3), Hooded
Merganser (2), as well as a coot.
A stop by Meng's Pond on Meng Road in Warren County
revealed a single Forster's Tern in alternate plumage
resting on a post in the pond. Another nice bird to
add to the remarkable list of those recorded there the
past few years. Not bad for a farm pond at the end of
June.
