Hello Paula and list,

It's very normal for young ruby-throats to hang around until roughly October
15 in Kentucky, and almost every year we have a few reports until November
1. I myself had at least 3 still as of yesterday.

On another note, if you see a notable size difference, then the smaller one
is likely a young male as males are smaller than females, but everyone
should start paying closer attention to late hummingbirds with an eye out
for rarities. If anyone continues to see any hummingbirds past November 1,
let me or the list know as the probability that they are actually
Ruby-throateds starts to diminish rapidly and we would like to follow-up on
those.
