[birdky] BKY: lexington reservoirs and a young birder story

I counted 100+ Hooded Mergansers this morning on reservoir #4. it is
hard to get a head count on diving ducks when they are active. Yesterday
also included a single Canvas back (or as the framed print in our office
calls them "big water cans").

My brother Daniel's daughter, Sarah Grace, is not yet three, but is
showing signs of becoming a bird enthusiast. She has a book that shows
pictures of a dozen or so birds and with the push of a button delivers
their song/call. With only listening, no picture, she correctly
identified an Eastern Towhee (tueee). But the best part was when we got
to the Barred Owl she said "let me tell you something" (her repeated
phrase). "This owl doesn't go Who Who. Not all owls sound like that." We
then practiced the haw haw haw haaaaaw; I think Kathy Caminiti may have
competition. I think my new year's resolution will be to get involved in
developing her birding interest.

Happy New Year!
