[birdky] BKY: Off topic, but interesting (and they fly!) . . . KY Indiana bats in MI

Some very interesting info about our federally endangered Indiana bat, which
shows strong site fidelity similar to that that has been documented in many
long distance migrant songbirds.

> A new paper out in the Journal of Mammalogy documents the following band
> recoveries that include two from KY. These are Indiana bats coming from a
> single maternity colony in SE MI, W of Detroit.
>
> Four of 34 bats banded at the maternity site in SE MI were later found in
> hibernation. A male was banded on 15 June 1995 and recaptured in Ray's
> Cave, Greene Co., IN, on 3 February 2001. One female was captured as she
> left a roost on 3 July 1996 and was found hibernating in Bat Cave, Carter
> Co., KY on 28 January 1997. A second female was banded originally on 24
> June 1997 and discovered at Batwing Cave, Crawford Co, IN on 21 January
> 1999. A 3rd female was initially caught leaving a roost on 5 July 1998 and
> she eventually was found in Waterfall Cave, Rockcastle Co., KY on 1
> October 1999. Both bats that hibernated in KY were also recaptured in MI
> in later summers. Migration distance was approx. 410, 424, 472, and 532
> km, respectively for an avg of 460 km.
>
> In the same paper, individual females were documented to be returning to
> the same maternity area for up to 4 years later. And the overall rate of
> recapture at this maternity site was 12 of 29 bats (41%). So these little
> gals are exhibiting strong site fidelity akin to that previously shown in
> birds that also migrate great distances! Another interesting thing to
> note is that because Indiana bats mate at their hibernacula, individuals
> from widely spaced wintering locations mix together during the maternity
> season.
