Black-and-whites are well-known for their early "wanderings." They are
among the first to return in spring, and I have seen fledged young in Land
Between the Lakes by mid-May. Males are not infrequently heard singing in
what is essentially non-breeding habitat by mid-June. I had two separte
birds in such presumed habitat on a BBS route on June 21st this year. On my
family's farm in eastern Jefferson County (not far from where Jane and Pat
live) I regularly heard the species in late June and early July (when I used
to spend much time there). You will note a comment about this behavior in
The Ky Breeding Bird Atlas. Another species that regularly appears like
this is the Blue-winged Warbler.
In fact, most species of songbirds -- including warblers -- do this
regularly, but because most begin their wandering (or casual southward
migration) during or after mid-July when song pretty much ceases in most
warblers, it is not detected readily. It is also possible that
Black-and-whites DO sing a little more during this wandering time than other
species.
