[birdky] BKY: Birding at Bernheim Forest

Despite the cold and wind, we wentto bird at Bernheim Forest this morning. Fallen trees, branches and limbs were everywhere. The staff has cleared all the roads however. It is so sad to see what the ice storm has done to the trees in our forests. The pine trees are especially hard hit.

Pine siskins were located in good numbers near both of the nature centers. One lone female purple finch was at the feeders at the education center. Towhees and a fox sparrow were first of year birds for us. There were also a few yellow-rumps around.

Black vultures were flying over the meadow. One large group of sandhill cranes flew overhead going north. It always great to be alerted of their presence by their unique calls.

Good birding to you all,

Pat and Jane Bell
