Today I watched the avocet feeding at Spindletop lake in Lexington. Thanks Joe
for your post, this was a life bird for me and I had great views of it sweeping
the water in the sunset. Also at least a dozen shovelers.
I also noticed a big sparrow movement just yesterday at one of our research
places in Lexington, with several mixed species flocks of over 30 birds moving
between some bushes. Mostly field sparrows (which aren't there in the summer)
but also some swamp sparrows, several white-throated sparrows, and what I was
pretty sure was a sharp-tailed sparrow (I've never seen one before, but it had
a very distinctive coloured face pattern and a noticeably large bill).
Cheers
Ian
