The birds have really dropped off at the Arboretum - at least that was the
case today. We saw /heard far fewer species this week than last. Oddly
enough, or perhaps not so oddly (?), we saw two yellow billed cuckoos in two
different areas of the Arboretum - one out in the open near the wetland, one
in the woods. Funny how I never noticed these birds before, thinking them
to be somehow rare, and now it seems I'm seeing them fairly frequently.
Warblers were few - a chestnut-sided was the only one I saw. Good views of
an immature kestrel sitting atop its nest box, probably waiting for someone
to feed it. We did see a female scarlet tanager in the woods.
Perhaps the wind and/or the front passing through has affected the numbers
we're seeing.
