[birdky] A few yard birds

I've been away from KY most of the summer, so I have missed a lot. But this
past week or so has brought some splendid backyard viewing. One secret? I
indulge myself for a time each day by turning on a sprinkler in different parts
of the yard. Wow! What a good idea! Lots of birds can't resist.

Yellow-throated Warbler (2, bathing), 9/18)
Magnolia Warbler (9/18, 1 watching the bathers)
Northern Parula (at least 4 males, 1 female, hanging around daily--sometimes
bathing)
Ruby-throateds (about 4--nice males and several imms. at feeders, daily)
Black-and-white Warbler (2 on 9/22, not bathing)
Bluebird (small flock of 5, bathing, 9/22, 23, 24)
Summer Tanager (most beautiful female I've ever seen--on the grape jelly
feeder, fighting bees for a bite: 9/18)
Blackburnian Warbler (male, feeding in upper canopy near the lake, 9/24)
Chimney Swift flyover (50 or more, 9/24 a.m.)
Cardinals, House Finches, House Sparrows, towhees, robins, catbird, Brown
Thrasher and 1 Chipping Sparrow--bathing

You will notice the absence of starlings or grackles in the list. They are
plentiful in the area, but they have not invaded the puddles, for reasons I
can't explain, knowing their tendencies.

Cheers!
Kathy Cohen (Panorama Shores, Calloway County, near Murray)
