[birdky] 739 pond

I have yet to be disappointed by the short drive over to Logan County's own
mini-transient lake. Sunday morning was no exception. At first everything
seemed quiet. The swallows were all gone except for a few Barn Swallows. No
terns in sight. Then the Black-bellied Plovers appeared in flight and settled
at about the same spot on the opposite shore where they were on our last visit.
They don't seem to care for the muddy corn stubble shallows where most of the
other birds congregate. Other shore birds were still there too - Dunlins,
dowitchers, Semi-palmated Plovers, Pectoral Sandpipers, Lesser Yellow-legs and
Least Sandpipers all for sure. This group allowed close approach on my previous
visits but seemed exceptionally tame yesterday. I soon saw the reason. A
Peregrine Falcon zoomed by and missed a flock of peeps as they were making a
short flight. I watched it circle overhead until it got so high I lost it.
Another behavioral note - On our previous visit, The Black-bellied Plovers
and the Ruddy Turnstone walked out of sight up into the newly planted corn as
we circled the shoreline, then walked back down after we passed. Maybe that's
how Dave's Ruddy Turnstones eluded him except for his magically lucky flight
shot.
