We checked on the Red-tailed Hawk nest again today. There just appeared to be
one baby on the nest today while there was two last week. I got the scope
trained on it just in time to see the bottom half of a Chipmunk before it
disappeared down the chick's throat.
I also trained the scope on the little Beech tree before getting close to it
and there in the very same spot as the last 2 weeks was the gray phase Screech
Owl. Due to the dense shade, the camera indicated a hopelessly slow shutter
speed. Why oh why thought I, did I not follow Dave's example and get a coupling
device? The owl sat tight as I approached closer so I decided to put just the
camera on the tripod and use the time release shutter. The result wasn't great
but I got a recognizable shot from about 15 feet away. Mark may post it in a
month or two, if he takes a notion.
