Don Carrier has found on the internet a book written in the late 1800's that
talks about the names for the American Woodcock. According to the book the
words Hookum Pake imitates the sound the bird makes, though I find it hard to
make the words match the sound in my own mind. Here is a paragraph from that
book where the author is talking about the different names for the bird and
where they were used.
