Many of you know that Jane & I have had phoebes nesting in the entranceway
to our house. This has gone on almost every spring since we moved into the
house in 1985. You may recall that last year I posted that Barn Swallows
had appropriated the nest from the phoebes, added a few feathers to convert
it to a swallow nest, and raised a family there. Those of you who were are
the CBC count this past December may have seen the Carolina Wren that used
the nest as a roost. Well, the process has gone one step further. The wren
has a mate and they have decided to remodel to make the nest suitable for a
wren family. So we now have a phoebe/swallow/wren nest. I've seen one
species take over a nest built by a different one (a Red-tailed Hawk family
took over the Great Blue Heron nest near the Mud Hole), but I don't know of
a third species moving in. Here's the latest incarnation of the nest.
