Hi All Here is a very good newsletter that the Conservation Center sends out on bird research here in the Commonwealth. Most of it is in the eastern part of the state due to the Centers association with the college of William and Mary. Still some great stuff on some great research going on within the state and the world. Captured birds have been fitted with state-of-the-art tracking devices that record GPS locations every hour, store the information in data files, and communicate the data to researchers via satellite. When completed, this will be one of the largest tracking studies of bald eagles ever conducted. <http://ccb-wm.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1a35c4d03f9d02f054316aa09&id=79 a5902ed6&e=a30096a13f> Full story at CCB's online newsletter Back to Top <> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> CCB | E-Newsletter <http://www.ccb-wm.org/news/images/email_images/transmitterWinnie_sq.JPG> Photo (c) CCB <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> Winnie the Whimbrel has trekked to the Pacific coast CCB and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in Virginia successfully used a state of the art satellite transmitter to track a whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus) from Virginia to Alaska, and now to Oregon. This event documents an unknown and unexpected migration route between the mid-Atlantic coast and the northwestern Arctic. The whimbrel completed the apparent nonstop flight from Virginia to Alaska, of more than 5,000 km (3,200 miles) in 146 hours. The whimbrel, referred to now as Winnie, is continuing her flight. You can follow her progress with CCB at our whimbrel tracking website. <http://ccb-wm.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1a35c4d03f9d02f054316aa09&id=39 38fbd9af&e=a30096a13f> CCB's Whimbrel Website Back to Top <> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> Peregrines beneath bridge <http://www.ccb-wm.org/news/images/email_images/PEFAHackBxNewRG_garyHartley_ sq.jpg> Full story at CCB's online newsletter Back to Top <> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> Tagged black vulture <http://www.ccb-wm.org/news/images/email_images/BLVU_RayFernald_DSC0412_crop .jpg> Photo courtesy of Ray Fernald/VDGIF <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> Investigating Human-Vulture Conflicts In recent decades, managing conflicts between wildlife populations and humans has become a growth industry. Whether it is the impact of expanding deer herds on agricultural crops, or cormorants depleting southern fish farms it is increasingly difficult for managers to strike a balance between social interests and the health of wildlife populations. The Center for Conservation Biology is partnering with Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the Virginia state office of U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services to collect and analyze data on black vulture populations. <http://ccb-wm.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1a35c4d03f9d02f054316aa09&id=8a 32e07641&e=a30096a13f> Full story at CCB's online newsletter Back to Top <> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> CCB | E-Newsletter <http://www.ccb-wm.org/news/images/email_images/PlaneShorebirdsWatts_coCr.jp g> Photo (c) CCB <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> CCB Returns to Panama to Reassess Migrant Shorebirds The Panama Canal Zone and the greater Bay of Panama represents a continental crossroads where large numbers of intercontinental migrants converge. During the fall of 1997, the Center for Conservation Biology in collaboration with the Department of Defense Legacy Program and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute conducted the first systematic investigation of waterbirds within this region. This fall, CCB researchers will reassess the status of shorebirds in the upper Bay of Panama. <http://ccb-wm.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1a35c4d03f9d02f054316aa09&id=d7 b52c8975&e=a30096a13f> Full story at CCB's online newsletter Back to Top <> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> <http://ccb-wm.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1a35c4d03f9d02f054316aa09&id=27 0cfffcef&e=a30096a13f> CCB | E-Newsletter (c) CCB Logo <http://www.cs.wm.edu/~zichu/email_images/s.gif> Welcome to the new CCB E-Newsletter Please visit our newsletter web page to sign up for our mailing list!
