I found this small Sharp-shinned sitting in the tree over the yard pond today
after noticing that there was no activity at the feeder and a single nuthatch
at the suet feeder was frozen in place. This fellow sat in the tree for about
15 minutes while being scolded by a Blue Jay, several titmice and a couple of
chickadees. Some of them were within 3 feet of it and a couple of times it
looked like the Sharpie was going to go for them, but each time he backed out.
It then flew to the top of the platform feeder (see photo) and sat there for a
few minutes before launching itself at the birds in the azalea bush near the
pond stream. Unable to flush the birds the hawk then circled the yard before
clearing the trees at the edge of the woods and headed off to the northeast.
These photos were taken through the kitchen window so the quality is a bit
compromised.
