[bcab] Re: upgrading from windows 98 to windows XP

Hi Graham VISTA's "Home Basic" edition minimum requirements will be an 800Mhz
processor and 512Mb
RAM, with 800 x 800 SVGA graphics. So you should be okay on that count! See

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/systemrequirements.mspx

VISTA Premium edition, will require a slightly higher spec.

"1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor.
1 GB of system memory.
Support for DirectX 9 graphics with a WDDM driver, 128 MB of graphics memory
(minimum), Pixel Shader
2.0 and 32 bits per pixel.
40 GB of hard drive capacity with 15 GB free space.
DVD-ROM Drive.
Audio output capability.
Internet access capability."

(from )
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/capable.mspx

The minimum requirements for the other 2 versions of VISTA, "Business", and
"Ultimate" remains to be
seen, I don't think MS have clarified that yet.

However it's probably still well worth knowing the minimum hardware
requirements, in order to at
least to some extent "future-proof " a PC. Also bear in mind that "minimum
requirements" should
normally be surpassed, so in other words if planning to run Vista premium,
people will want OVER 1
gig ram. They originally said XP would run on 128 Mb RAM, well it did, but
only in slow motion!

Unfortunately it also looks as though it hasn't been clarified anywhere yet
either, which versions
of VISTA will be supported by which versions of the popular screen readers.
It's certainly true
that the latest Jaws, 8.0, does not support vista yet but "will be required for
it". From GW Micro
we are told that "there's no solution for Vista yet for Wineyes users, but a
patch for 6.0 that will
enable Vista support is on its way". And from Dolphin "The current versions of
the Dolphin Access
products (V7 and earlier) are not compatible with Windows Vista. We are
currently working on Windows
Vista Support and planning to release a version compatible with Vista in 2007. "

probably. the machine does not really have the power to run Vista and I
wouldn't suggest doing this in a hurry.

Hi

Forgive this late comment but is using XP upgrade the way to go when Vista
is just around the corner.

Kind regards

This is an access to work person but you would be lucky if Access to work
paid for you to upgrade a PC as this is really a business need. I would say
that for any business, an upgrade from Windows ME or 98 to XP is absolutely
essential because of the lack of security updates.

Cheers

Hi Graham,

I put "Windows 98" (in quotes) into Google, and up came Amazon,
among others.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Windows-Second-version-Home-asin/dp/B00004U7MU

I'm a bit confused since you now mention Access to Work. If they
are paying, why not simply go for the full new version of XP?

George.

Hi George. I would say that if you are going to upgrade then indeed
you may as well go for a gig.

This is a small organisation, a church based project. I have
nothing to do with the project but get the impression that they would like
to save any money they can. If they have a Windows 98 CD then I would like
to go for an XP upgrade unless the difference in cost really is small.

Where would be the best place to look? doing a google search just
seems to come up with loads of these crappy price comparison sites which can
be quite good though the best prices fluctuate wildly and are not really
suitable for Access to Work quotes where it can be at least a week or 2
before the order is made.

Regards

Graham

Hi Graham,

Personally, I'd opt for a NEW version of XP (SP2), rather
than have to rely on having to obtain (and keep) an 98 CD.

May I also recommend upping the RAM to a full Gigabyte.
512MB is really pushing it these days.

George.

Subject: [bcab] upgrading from windows 98 to windows XP

Hi all.

I have a client running windows 98 on a PC with 512MB of RAM
and a Pentium 4 processor with a clock speed of 3 GHZ.

This person is likely to need an upgrade as she uses this to
connect to the internet for her work and of course Windows 98 is no longer
getting security updates etc. Also, I know connecting an IPaq is now
difficult with Windows 98, though I would have thought that Activesync 3.8
ought to work. maybe this is not the case with Windows Mobile 2005.

Anyway, is the best route to buy an upgrade disk and then
use it to do a clean install, supplying the original Windows 98 disk when
asked?

Where is the best place to buy a Windows 98 upgrade from or
am I not likely to get one now? In this case is the only for this client to
buy a full boxed version of Windows XP?

Regards

Graham
