[bcab] Re: upgrading from windows 98 to windows XP

To pick up on this point.

How will Vista cope with enlarging and screen reading software. Many people
have had problems with IE 7 and now will be faced with Vista when they buy a
new machine.

Kind regards

Charles Crisp

XP will be cheaper and you will get better value out of the hardware as it
presently stands. Base end memory config for VISTA would be 1GB RAM
straight away with another stick on the way quick. XP is not going to
dissappear from support for some years to come. Niether are screen reader
manufacturers going to drop XP in a hurry.

probably. the machine does not really have the power to run Vista
and I
wouldn't suggest doing this in a hurry.

        Hi

Forgive this late comment but is using XP upgrade the way to go when
Vista
        is just around the corner.

This is an access to work person but you would be lucky if Access to
work
paid for you to upgrade a PC as this is really a business need. I
would say
that for any business, an upgrade from Windows ME or 98 to XP is
absolutely
essential because of the lack of security updates.

        Cheers

        Hi Graham,

I put "Windows 98" (in quotes) into Google, and up came Amazon,
        among others.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Windows-Second-version-Home-asin/dp/B00004U7MU

I'm a bit confused since you now mention Access to Work. If they
are paying, why not simply go for the full new version of XP?

        George.

Hi George. I would say that if you are going to upgrade then indeed
you may as well go for a gig.

This is a small organisation, a church based project. I have
nothing to do with the project but get the impression that they
would like
to save any money they can. If they have a Windows 98 CD then I
would like
to go for an XP upgrade unless the difference in cost really is
small.

Where would be the best place to look? doing a google search just
seems to come up with loads of these crappy price comparison sites
which can
be quite good though the best prices fluctuate wildly and are not
really
suitable for Access to Work quotes where it can be at least a week
or 2
        before the order is made.

        Regards

        Graham

        Hi Graham,

Personally, I'd opt for a NEW version of XP (SP2), rather
than have to rely on having to obtain (and keep) an 98 CD.

May I also recommend upping the RAM to a full Gigabyte.
512MB is really pushing it these days.

        George.

        Hi all.

I have a client running windows 98 on a PC with 512MB of RAM
and a Pentium 4 processor with a clock speed of 3 GHZ.

This person is likely to need an upgrade as she uses this to
connect to the internet for her work and of course Windows 98 is no
longer
getting security updates etc. Also, I know connecting an IPaq is
now
difficult with Windows 98, though I would have thought that
Activesync 3.8
ought to work. maybe this is not the case with Windows Mobile 2005.

Anyway, is the best route to buy an upgrade disk and then
use it to do a clean install, supplying the original Windows 98 disk
when
        asked?

Where is the best place to buy a Windows 98 upgrade from or
am I not likely to get one now? In this case is the only for this
client to
buy a full boxed version of Windows XP?

        Regards
