  Jane,

You don't need to have JAWS to get the Nanno talking. If you have a SAPI 5
synthesizer installed, for any screen reader, you can get this to work,
however, it must be a SAPI 5 synthesizer.

If you go into Control Panel and select Speech, you will find a Text To
Speech Tab and, if you select this, you can select a default synthesizer. This
need not be the same as what you use for your screen reader (I believe that the
default is usually Microsoft Sam, used when Narrator is started within WINDOWS
XP. I know that this voice is not very good, however, if this is all that you
have, I believe that it would still get the Nanno working for you.

Please log onto www.tandt-consultancy.com, select the Blogs and Podcasts link
and you can download 2 MP3 Podcasts- one for ITunes 8 and one for the new IPOD
Nanno itself. This should give you all the information you require.

  All the best.

  Many Thanks, With Kind Regards,

  dear Charles,
I noticed you mentioned about real speak in Jaws, but if you don't have Jaws,
can you still use the Nano? I don't use Jaws, I use another screen reader and
wondered how easy i would find it?

  Steve,

  Thanks for this.

I do have the Real Speak Solo voices from a previous version of JAWS and it
is great to think that these could be transferred to a Nanno to 4th Generation
to make menus, playlists and the like speak. I don't mind using the Nanno's
wheel if I am given some audio feedback.

As you are using the new Nanno, had you to go through many procedures to have
the voices sent to it, via ITunes, from your PC? Do the voices take up a lot of
space on the Nanno? If I have the Real Speak Solo SAPI 5 voices installed with
my JAWS, do I need to point ITunes to my JAWS folder? Are there any
instructions written down, in electronic format, explaining installation and
subsequent use of the voices on the Nanno?

  Thanks in advance.

  Many Thanks, With Kind Regards,

  Hi Charles,

You can’t use Solo Direct voices, as they are not SAPI5 voices. The Nano and
Itunes will only support SAPI5 voices. But if you have an oearlier version of
JAWS, like V8, you get the Realspeak SAPI voices on that CD, so you could
install them and use Realspeak.

Yes, I use the iPod Nano 4G 16GB version, and it is great. Once you get used
to manipulating the wheel, it is not difficult.

  All the best

  Steve

  Richard,

You mention the 4th Generation Nanno. Do these come by default with
capability for speech enabling the menus etc?

If so, could you or someone on the list please let me know if you are already
using such a device as a blind person with speech and how you find it to use?
How easy is it to set up and, if you import the speech from the PC via ITunes,
is this effectively your speech synthesizer, e.g. Realspeak Solo Direct voices?

Is there anywhere on the web I can read further about this particular type of
functionality? I guess there might not be much of it in Apple's standard blurb
on the Nanno.

I am not too keen on using ITell, as this would involve me in another piece
of kit, in addition to the Nanno itself.

  Thank you in advance.

  Hi,

I don't listen to In Touch so don't know which one precisely you're looking
for, but...

  1. The 4th Generation Nano can be obtained from various sources such as

  http://www.dabs.com

  or

  http://www.amazon.co.uk

This one is very small and uses iTunes to install speech from your PC onto
the Nano. The 16gb version costs arond £143.

  2. The iTell works with the iPod Classic and can be got from

  http://www.cobolt.co.uk

The iTell is a separate remote control which plugs into the iPod and has
tangible buttons to press rather than the iPod wheel. It costs around £70 on
top of which, of course, you will need to buy the iPod.

  Hope this helps.

  Regards
