[bcab] Re: software for students

Alan,

If I had to choose between just thouse 2 screenreaders, I would say JAWS wins
at the moment, mainly because it has better help for the new user. There are
also probably some pages that JAWS accesses better. Currently it has a more
mature scripting language.

It is also fair to say however that the performance of HAL has improved vastly
in recent times and with the introduction of scripting into HAL and supernova I
really do believe that things could become more interesting in the future and
as you didn't ask I have not really touched on window-eyes here though it is a
good screenreader.

How much support using the screenreader will this person need? More people use
JAWS than anythhing else at the moment due in the main to the facgt that a few
years ago JAWS was clearly and undisputedly the most advanced screenreader.
HAL is developed in the UK and has a deserved reputation for offering good
technical support.

In short, it's closer than it has ever been!

Regards

Graham

  Subject: [bcab] software for students

  Hello folks
A friend is going on a theological studies course, and does not know which
speech software works best with vista and word for students and home. She will
be able to ask for the latest version of either jaws or hal, but is not an
experienced user. I have not used vista myself, and so cannot comment on the
relative merits of various screen readers with it. I know that some have
preferences for one over the other, but I am looking for a balanced view.
Perhaps someone who has used several screen readers with vista can help with
some feedback. I do not want a full assessment, but just want to find out
which works overall easier and/or if there are particular problems with any of
them. Thanking you in anticipation.

  cheers
  Alan Michael Rayner
