[bcab] Re: router remote management

I think what Steve's thinking about is when NTL used transparent proxy
servers.

VM removed these this year.

See the Wikkipedia article on this,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgin_Media

I hated these transparent proxys!

Caching bloody everything that was popular.

It made seeing some sites in real-time a pain.

Steve,

I think there is some confusion here. What I was sayinhg to Barry was
that I could reach his router on port 8080 from my home Internet
connection. I merely mentioned in passing that it was a VM account. This
method of Internet connection definitely DOES NOT use a proxy server. It
is a direct Internet connection. What I suggested to Barry was that his
problem of not being able to access the same thing from his work account
was that this is probably going via a proxy server. That is the normal
way work-based networks access the Internet. I was suggesting he
specifically exclude the IP address/name he is trying to reach from
going via the proxy server. You do this in IE -> tools -> Internet
options then connections tab and LAN settings button.

Your comment about all traffic going through a proxy with VM makes no
sense to me I'm afraid. There is no proxy involved in my connection to
the Internet from home using VM.

I came to VM as I was originally a virgin.net customer. I must say I
have found the service, though not the cheapest out there, very reliable
and have had good experience using their tech support.

Regards,
Phil.

Hi Phil,

Unfortunately, with Virgin Media, you can't exclude the proxy, because
all traffic is routed through the proxy, and no arguments. I hate VM
but it is the best performing connection in my area, and I hate DSL even
more <Smile>.

All the best

Steve

Hi Barry,

Port 8080 definitely still works. I've just tried it from my VM account
here at home and I get your Linksys WRT300N login screen up.

All this points to the problem being caused by the proxy server your
work is likely to be using to get you out on to the net. Have you tried
altering your IE settings to exclude the target from going via the
proxy. This might work.

Cheers,
Phil.

Steve,

At the time you sent this mail I had changed the port to, 8080 again.

I was able to log on from my parents connection in Belfast and theyre on
VM as well.

It's good it's secure but I'm trying to get in from work this morning
and I've a feeling it's going to just timeout again. Even on a fairly
standard port of 8080.

Hi Barry,

Neither work. I get the IP address while it is trying to connect, I see
you are on Virgin Media (Smile), but then it gives me the good old Can't
display the page stuff.

All the best

Steve

Steve,

You don't' need to open the port. The router auto does this if you
specify the port to be used in remote man.

Do me a favour try one of the following,

http://djpaddy.is-a-geek.com:4836

Djpaddy.is-a-geek.com:4836

Do you get anything?

I was testing it last night and it looked like it was working both
internally and externally. Now I've got to work and tried it it's
timing out. That could be our works proxy though, but I'd like to make
sure. Please try those addresses, and anyone else that's feeling kind.
