You are right David, RDP does require Jaws to be installed on the server.
However, it doesn't have
to be running on the server all the time. The best thing to do is create a
separate log in for the
Jaws user, then place a shortcut to Jaws in the "startup" menu for that log in.
That way it only
gets to run when someone who needs it is actually using it. For all other
users and at all other
times it is latent and does the server no harm.
Another problem area which can crop up is version matching. For example when
Windows first brought
out SP3 for Windows XP, the RDP connection interface became incompatible with
Jaws. I'm not sure
if this got fixed with version 10 though, it may well have done. But we use
RDP at TAFN (The
Accessible Friends Network) and this meant that 2 of our blind admins had to
uninstall XP service
pack 3 from their home machines last year to get around it. Otherwise quite
simply they couldn't
have used it.
Lastly for Jaws users the pricing to facililtate RDP is quite expensive as
well. I think the add
on cost is somewhere around £125, which may not be much to a corporate company
but it is to an
individual or small charity like ours.
Thankfully as TAFN has got an screen reader S M A Cost support fund for its
members, we had this
covered though. RDP comes free of charge with Windoweyes, by comparison...
There are lots of good sides to RDP including being able to edit on the server
live in the Windows
environment, being able to upload through the clipboard, and more. One of my
co-admins uses Jaws
and has been able to get some first class work done using it.
Having now said all this though I have looked at Joe Patons original request
for information. It
looks as though he is asking about a solution for remote tech support for
workstations. For that,
the only product I know is Serotek Remote Access Manager. We also use this
at TAFN to do remote
support to our members and it works very well. We bought 1 years access to it
from Computer Room
Services last year, and its gone well so far.
We've actually got the RIM (remote incident manager) solution which involves
the help recipient
installing a host program, the administrator installing a client program, & the
two of them mutually
agreeing a one off password for the session. If the help recipient uses Jaws
or Windoweyes, then
the remote speech is transmitted back to the administrator, a feature which I
think this package has
exclusively.

Doesn't rdp require that jaws is active on the remote machine. I was going
to get into it, but none of my customers seemed to be too happy about having
jaws on their systems.
