[bcab] printing problems

When a document is printed from MS word, the output is what you would expect. When a message is printed from OE, the results are rubbish. Let me define this type of rubbish, straight lines of random characters and symbols, that would not make any literal sense to anybody on this earth, irrespective of the language they read or spoke.
So waht I need to know is, How is this? Word is using the hp1300 default driver, and I thought, so is every other program on the computer, unless you set it up for an alternative device. And I don't have a second printer attached.
seriously though What can cause this? outlook express options are all set to plain text. Any ideas?
